Open Call Roles:
Jeremiah - Lead. 9 -11. African American runaway slave boy. Jeremiah is an inquisitive, curious, and eager child with few filters. He says what he thinks with no pretense. He too wants to go home, wherever that is. His life is filled with wonder, even when he sees the most horrible things. His understanding of the universe is far wiser than his slight frame and young years suggest. From the first moment we see him, even the cruelest of men realize that he is special. Please, Tennessee submissions ONLY.
Adena - Supporting lead. 24 - 32. Samuel’s long-suffering wife. She's lived a hard life on the family’s isolated ranch. Frail, but determined, she refuses to allow a hard life to wear her down.
Mr. Magian - Supporting Lead. 35 - 60: Black preacher and healer. Mr. Magian can heal a heart and the soul. He raises Samuel from a wound that should have killed him and sends him on his journey, while guiding him on the way.
Cherokee Kid - Early 20s, Native American Indian serving as a Confederate Soldier. Please, Tennessee submissions ONLY.
Medicine Woman - Age open. 21 - 70. Native American Indian Medicine Woman. Practicing her arts at fireside. Please, Tennessee submissions ONLY.
Rose - Young African American Girl. 9 - 14. A young runaway slave who follows Mr. Magian. She often sings to herself. Please, Tennessee submissions ONLY.
Jasmine - Young African American Girl. 12 - 16. A young runaway slave. Loves to sing. Please, Tennessee submissions ONLY.
Ms. Minty (Harriet Tubman) - African American woman. 30 -50'S. She is really Harriet Tubman, hiding and working in a traveling puppet show. She also plays the character of Eliza in the puppet show.
Puppet Face Uncle Tom - African American. Male, 20 - 30. Traveling stage character who plays Uncle Tom in the puppet show of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Please, Southern SAG submission ONLY.
Puppet Face Chloe - African American. Female, 20 - 30. Traveling stage character, Chloe, in the puppet show of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Please, Southern SAG submission ONLY.
Grave Digger - Male, 30-40.
10-12 Puppet show audience
5-10 Church goers
15-20 -Civil War reenactor soldiers with own uniform and kit; at least 10 UNION & 10 CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS per side for battle weekend.
2-3 UNION & CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS - Extras - various scenes (including Confederate Sniper who turns out to be Samuel at the end. (himself - so same costume) Always played in shadow and hidden.
